Welcome to my humble abode of movies, gaming, & weird techie goodness. :)

Indecisive? Thats me!

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

The 'highlight reel' section of my blogOk I’ll admit it – I’m very indecisive. I can hardly ever leave things alone, and I have to fiddle, as I can never decide what looks better, or what I want to do etc. It’s very prevalent in my relationship with Smoo – we’re both the same, and we both find it hard to come to a decision on things (to be honest, its normally on really inane things like what movie to watch etc… anything important we’re normally pretty good at deciding the correct course of action).

So… as you can see… I’ve fiddled with my blog… again. Yep that makes it the first changeover of 2009, but within the last 2-3 months I’ve messed with the design about four times altogether. (Sorry!)

My reasoning is that I’m trying to find a design that’s easy to navigate, but easy to read and get to where you’re trying to go (if that makes sense). Previously I’ve had to fiddle with plugins because things wouldn’t link back to the homepage etc, and it really started to piss me off. This design is different.

The category section of the front page

I’ve gone for a magazine-style layout to make things more legible… and I’m prettymuch done. I’ve also culled my categories down to 7, as they just weren’t necessary. Although with the categories displayed on the homepage completely separately, it means that there are some duplicate thumbnails displaying at the moment (that will change when I post a bit more regularly as I want to limit the amount of categories I assign to a particular post).

I’ve also added a few new plugins… one of the coolest ones being the Insights plugin that allows you to search and insert content into your post as you write it. This allows me to add the following image from flickr without leaving the edit screen:

You can also search and embed Google Maps (API needed), Video (Youtube), Wikipedia and more.

Anyway I hope you prefer this layout – if you find anything confusing, please let me know and I’ll tweak things as best as possible to make things easier to read and navigate etc.

All the best for the new year everyone!

GBrowser (aka Google “Chrome”) Incoming

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Today Google’s Official Blog let the world know that the beta client of the rumoured gBrowser (now confirmed as being called “Chrome”) is to be released on Windows tomorrow today in 100 countries.

Reading the brief write-up on Google’s ideas for the browser, it sounds promising:

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn’t the browser that matters. It’s only a tool to run the important stuff — the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

I’ll be checking it out tomorrow as soon as I’m able, and I’ll more than likely update this post with my impressions/findings… but Mozilla have already said that they “aren’t worried” by Google’s step into the browser warzone, which Mozilla’s Firefox has been dominating of late.

Update:
Just got my hands on Chrome, and I’m very impressed. Here’s my 12second thought on it:

Blog Redesign

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

As you may, or may not have noticed depending on how often (if at all) you visit, I’ve had a bit of a fiddle with new themes recently, and have stuck with the V5 theme by Yichi.

The new look of my blog

The new look of my blog

This is a great theme, although not widget ready unfortunately – I also had to edit the theme a fair bit to get certain things working, and remove broken features – and the initial feedback I had from some Plurk buddies was fairly positive too. :)

Disqus – making blog comments social

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I came across a service called Disqus today thanks to the blog over at Readburner… and I’m rather glad I did!

Disqus effectively creates a “forum” for your blog, allowing for threaded commenting and a community to grow around the comments themselves.

Disqus

I’ve added it to my blog as you can see – however as a consequence the existing comments are masked – the only drawback I’ve noticed so far. Disqus are looking at a comment import system – its listed within the settings for the plugin, but its not enabled just yet.

Anyway I’d urge anyone who blogs on a regular basis to check out Disqus

Video Blog Test – Unknown Territory

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Ok I decided to start doing a video blog every now & again, just as a change to some of the normal stuff I do – after all variety is the spice of life and all that crap!

Anyway this is just a test to see how it turns out – I’ll do a proper video blog in a week or so with actual content, and I’ll edit the video appropriately too. Please comment and let me know if you have any suggestions or if you want to see more etc… I’d like them to improve as well obviously!

For those of you that actually know me, you may take the piss – I’m expecting you to. :P

The new side of social webpages

Friday, February 1st, 2008

I came across something this morning that I thought was pretty cool – its a tool that will essentially turn any webpage into a social page, and will eliminate the need for unsightly shoutboxes.

Its called “Thats My Mouse“, and I read about it on Mashable – and found that it launched at 8am this morning, so thought I’d give it a whirl – so I’ve installed it on this blog for general useage. Its a small javascript installed that allows anyone on the same webpage to see what each other is doing, and chat too.

Thats my mouse - demo on a Forum

Now being at work, I can’t install the Internet Explorer addon needed (yes, I work for a retarded IT company that still uses IE6… they don’t get that Firefox or Opera are infinitely more secure), so I’ll have to wait until I get home before I can check it out – though you can check out a demo here, which I thought was quite nice.

Anyway check it out, see what you think… and in the meantime I’m going to try and get it working on my blog.
