WALL·E Review

Title: WALL·E
Director: Andrew Stanton
Starring: Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, Sigourney Weaver
Release Date: 18 July 2008 (UK)

Synopsis: In the distant future, mankind has left the Earth due to a global garbage crisis, rendering the planet inhabitable. Waste disposal bots are left behind in order to clean up the mess, and WALL·E is the last remaining one. His 700 year isolation as rendered interesting results, with WALL·E developing a personality. WALL·E’s clean-up operation is brought to a halt when he meets Eve – a reconnaissance robot sent to Earth to look for signs of sustainable life.

From the off, WALL·E looks great and is exceedingly charming to both children and adults.

Review: WALL·E is a cute, funny, heartfelt movie that I liked rather a lot. And in all honesty, it was the little things that amused me. Like when WALL·E recharges, he emits the old MAC startup sound. And the ship’s autopilot (played by Sigourney Weaver no less) is a great nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The first part of the movie is solely WALL·E running around compacting trash and collecting items of interest, and although that doesn’t sound as interesting, it was the part of the movie I enjoyed most. It was mostly the little jokes that I laughed hardest at… like when WALL·E finds a Spork, and doesn’t know wether to put it into his spoon or fork pile.

I could never do Rubick's Cubes either

One of my other favorite aspects of the movie is the way that they eyes of the robots were used to convey emotion. This is very true of Eve especially, as her eyes are portrayed in an almost anime style on the screen that acts as her face.

Another great aspect of the movie is that it is paced very well. I didn’t notice a lull, and the laughs are spaced out enough to keep a smile on your face throughout (aside from the intended sad parts… which did actually bring a tear to my eye in places).

All in all, I really liked WALL·E – its great for kids and adults alike, its a good story, and there’s a good morality take side to it too (with all the humans being overweight & not able to walk from doing absolutely nothing for 700 years, and the global garbage catastrophe on Earth that forced them to leave etc). I’ll definitely watch this again, and will be buying it too.
