HBO Adaptation of Preacher Canned

It seems that Mark Steven Johnson’s efforts to bring Garth Ennis’ Preacher to the small screen as a series have been canned, though it looks hopeful for a future feature film project.

Phew! Is anyone else thinking we just dodged a bullet there?

Comics Continuum have been talking to writer/director Johnson (the guy that gave us such big screen delights as Daredevil and Ghost Rider) about the discontinued venture:

We were budgeting and everything and it was getting really close to going, but the new head of HBO felt it was just too dark and too violent and too controversial. Which, of course, is kind of the point!

It was a very faithful adaptation of the first few books, nearly word for word. They offered me the chance to redevelop it but I refused. I’ve learned my lesson on that front and I won’t do it again. So I’m afraid it’s dead at HBO.

I’ve heard someone is in the process of getting the rights to turn it into a feature film. I hope that happens. But I hope it happens as a series of movies as one movie couldn’t do it justice. I really love that story and I dedicated a lot of my time to honor Garth’s work. But it wasn’t meant to be.

I see this as a blessing in disguise – personally I wouldn’t want Preacher to be desecrated the same way Ghost Rider and Daredevil were! Although to be fair MSJ isn’t nearly as bad as Uwe Boll – god help us if he decides to veer away from videogame movies and try to acquire comicbook movie rights!

This is a shame - I was looking forward to a serialised version... but as long as the feature movie is done by someone who has the kind of attention to detail as Zack Snyder, it should be cool.
